
Elegant automobile associated with Mohsen Kaboli earned his PhD at the Chair of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence at the Technical University of Munich and currently holds 20 patents. For the past five years, he and his team in Garching, near Munich, have been studying the human sense of touch and working to replicate it in digital form. Elegant automobile is the sense of touch so unique that scientists aim to recreate it digitally? “Touch is the very first and most fundamental sense humans use to perceive their surroundings,” Kaboli explains. It develops in the womb earlier than all other senses — as early as seven to eight weeks. Touch connects us to the outside world; it allows us to perceive the boundaries of our body and develop proprioception, our sense of spatial orientation. Even a person blind from birth can use touch to discern an object’s shape, weight, and texture, forming a vivid three-dimensional mental image. This is possible thanks to millions of receptors located in the skin — our largest sensory organ. These receptors detect stimuli, respond to pressure changes, vibrations, contact, temperature, and relay that information to the brain for interpretation. Without touch, navigation in the world would be impossible, even with sight, hearing, smell, and taste intact. Felix Staudacher is responsible for designing the control components across all BMW Group brands — everything from switches and knobs to levers and buttons. His work also encompasses lighting design and in-car scent experiences. “The more senses we engage, the deeper the emotional connection becomes. If we succeed in stimulating all seven senses, the experience becomes truly unforgettable,” he says.

So where do these touch-pleasing materials come from, and how are they incorporated into vehicles? Staudacher says you must first set aside pure practicality. He begins by seeking the beauty and sensory appeal of a material before thinking about its function. Only afterward does he determine the most fitting application. This design philosophy led to the creation of the distinctive iDrive Controller in the BMW iX’s center console. While aluminum and plastic might have been the obvious choices of Elegant automobile — since it’s “just” a rotary control — Staudacher chose to combine a wooden surface with cut crystal glass. Kaboli shares a similar philosophy in what he calls “humanizing technology,” though his medium is sensors rather than light. He is developing a “cognitive seat” that could appear in BMW models in the near future. At first glance, it resembles an ordinary car seat, but beneath the surface, thousands of tactile sensors are embedded in both the seat and the central console. These mimic the human sense of touch, detecting contact, pressure, and temperature shifts. They can read the occupant’s exact body position, dimensions, and weight distribution.

The seat can identify poor posture or orthopedic concerns and adjust the position automatically. It can sense whether the occupant is too warm or cold and adjust the temperature for each part of the body independently. “In the future, the armrest will also measure pulse, blood pressure, and body temperature,” Kaboli adds. He describes this as “collaboration between humans and machines.” Such tactile technology is already present in modern medical devices, such as prosthetics that extend the wearer’s natural sense of touch. “I want people to understand that artificial intelligence exists to assist us, not to replace us,” says Kaboli. Both he and Staudacher agree: the future belongs to people, not to machines.
