Mohsen Kaboli earned his PhD at the Chair of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence at the Technical University of Munich and currently holds 20 patents. For the past five years, he and his team have been conducting research in Garching near Munich, focusing on the human sense of touch and developing ways to digitize it. The BMW Group’s “Early Phase Development” unit is based in Garching. Instead of conventional office doors, the spaces here feature garage-style entrances. The nameplates aren’t typical titles or abbreviations but creative labels such as “Interior of the Future” (➜ Also read: BMW Vision Neue Klasse: experience the future now). Inside, you’ll find prototypes, concept designs, VR headsets, sketches, fabric swatches, steering wheels, and gear levers.
Why is the sense of touch so remarkable that scientists aim to replicate it digitally? “Touch is the very first and most vital human sense for perceiving our surroundings,” Kaboli explains. It develops in the womb before any other sense — at just seven to eight weeks. Touch is our link to the physical world; it allows us to understand the boundaries of our own body and develop proprioception, or an awareness of our position in space. Even a person blind from birth can, through touch, perceive the shape, mass, and surface of objects, forming an accurate three-dimensional mental picture. This is possible thanks to millions of receptors in the skin — our largest sensory organ — which detect pressure, vibrations, temperature changes, and tactile contact, then send this data to the brain for processing.
Without touch, navigating the world would be impossible, even if all other senses remained intact. Touch also plays a central role in thinking and cognitive development, enabling us from early childhood to differentiate between objects and grasp abstract concepts.
Felix Staudacher leads the design of control elements across all BMW Group brands — from buttons, levers, and switches to lighting design and the vehicle’s scent experience. “The more senses we engage, the more powerful the experience. If we succeed in stimulating all seven senses, the experience becomes deeply and emotionally embedded,” he says.
Cars are products with emotional impact, and people spend a significant part of their lives in them. Staudacher strives to craft design details that transform mere function into engaging sensory moments — creating materials and surfaces that are enjoyable to touch and operate.
What makes a product emotionally engaging? It often depends on the personal memories and feelings it triggers. “Everyone has a playful side,” he says. “There’s still a bit of the child in all of us.” This is visible in small, unconscious gestures: twirling hair while thinking, tapping fingers on a desk, fidgeting with hands, or bouncing a foot. These actions, often automatic, carry an emotional layer. Staudacher emphasizes that this human need for tactile interaction should not be lost as digital technology advances.
To find materials people love to touch — and decide how to integrate them into a car — Staudacher begins by focusing on their beauty, not their function. Practicality is considered only afterward. This approach led to the distinctive iDrive Controller in the BMW iX’s center console. While aluminum and plastic would have been the obvious materials for a simple rotary control, he instead selected a wooden base topped with cut crystal glass. Wood and glass invite touch and are widely perceived as premium, giving the user an elevated sensory experience.
The sensation embodied in Staudacher’s designs is precisely what his BMW colleague Mohsen Kaboli aims to bring into the vehicle using artificial intelligence. The focus is on simplicity and comfort, delivered through technology. Both Staudacher and Kaboli share the ambition to retain humanity and emotional connection within the digital realm, favoring rich sensory experiences over mere functionality and efficiency.
Though they approach the idea from different perspectives, they are united in their goal: blending the digital world into physical materials. This might mean embedding sensors within textiles or adding LED effects to wooden surfaces. “Modernity can also arise from absence, or from combining elements never before seen together,” Staudacher explains.
Take, for example, the fusion of light and fabric. Light, once used mainly to illuminate or convey information, now serves to create ambience, stir emotions, and offer visual beauty. “We’re trying to liberate light from the limitations of screens. Light and fabric merge into something entirely new.” His vision is to move away from touchscreens and cold, sterile materials, toward illuminated mats, foils, and fibers integrated into controls like door handles, switches, and dials. “Imagine brushing your hand across the dashboard and having the light follow your movements,” he muses. “Nobody could resist engaging with that.”
Kaboli pursues a similar vision, which he calls the “humanization of technology,” but focuses on sensors rather than light. He is developing a cognitive seat that could debut in BMW cars within the next few years. At first glance, it resembles a traditional car seat, but the entire seating surface and its connected center console are embedded with thousands of tactile sensors that mimic the human sense of touch. They respond to touch, pressure, and changes in temperature.
When paired with a data set and artificial intelligence, these sensors become truly interactive. The seat can recognize whether a passenger has poor posture or orthopedic issues and automatically adjust the seating position. It can sense if the occupant is perspiring or feeling cold and regulate the temperature for different parts of the body independently.
